This operation has generated an internal debate about the future of Axel Witsel, who renewed his contract with the club until 2025. Although both players are centre-backs with different characteristics in terms of their profile, they share some similarities that could lead the club to make difficult decisions.
Lenglet arrives at Atlético at a crucial time, with the club looking to consolidate its defence following the departure of key players such as Mario Hermoso. The French centre-back, known for his tactical intelligence and ability to read the game, fits perfectly into the style of play that Simeone wants to implement. However, his loan move means that if he lives up to expectations this season, Atlético could consider taking him on as a property, which would put Witsel's continuity at risk.
Simeone's wild card
Axel Witsel, meanwhile, has been a wild card for Simeone since his arrival at Atlético Madrid. Originally a defensive midfielder, Witsel has successfully adapted to the right-sided centre-back position, displaying a great ability to read the game. These similarities make it difficult for Simeone to justify keeping both in the squad beyond the current season.
