Official: Enrique Cerezo lets Simeone's wish slip away and signs for a 'top' team

The arrival of a player much loved by Simeone to another club is made official

Diego Pablo Simeone, always demanding and precise in the selection of players for his squad, has suffered a heavy loss with the departure of Mario Hermoso. Despite having made clear his desire to keep the Spanish centre-back, the board, headed by Enrique Cerezo, failed to reach an agreement for his renewal. Now, Hermoso has decided to continue his career at AS Roma, a top-level team that competes in the Italian Serie A.

Mario Hermoso, 29, was a key part of the Atletico defence during his time at Atlético de Madrid. His versatility and ability to play both as a centre-back and left-back made him a valuable asset for Simeone. Throughout his time at the Madrid club, Hermoso proved to be a solid player, with excellent ball delivery and good tactical positioning.

An exit that was seen from afar

Despite Simeone's repeated requests for the board to renew Hermoso's contract, negotiations fell through. Enrique Cerezo, known for his rigorous and often conservative management, was unwilling to meet the player's salary demands, leading to the talks breaking down. As a result, Hermoso found himself free to negotiate with other clubs upon the expiration of his contract with Atlético Madrid.

AS Roma were quick to move to secure the services of the Spanish centre-back. The agreement reached between Hermoso and the Roma club includes a salary of three and a half million euros per season, with the possibility of increasing it depending on certain objectives. The contract, which runs until June 2026 with the option for an additional year, reflects the confidence that Roma has placed in the former Atlético player.

A major loss

For Simeone, Hermoso's departure represents a significant blow, as he loses a defender who brought experience and leadership to the dressing room. The player's departure highlights once again the difficulties that a coach can face when his desires do not coincide with the decisions of the board. Although Atlético Madrid have other quality defenders, Hermoso's absence will be felt at key moments of the season.

For his part, Mario Hermoso begins a new stage in his career, with the challenge of establishing himself as a starter and helping the team achieve its objectives in Serie A. Serie A, known for its defensive rigour and tactical demands, seems to be an ideal environment for Hermoso to continue developing his skills. Under the guidance of Daniele de Rossi, the Spaniard has the opportunity to become a pillar of the Roma defence.
