Controversy in Atlético de Madrid's last match: exemplary sanction for Athletic

LALIGA continues its tough policy against any insults uttered in stadiums and sanctions Athletic.

Atlético de Madrid's last game before the international break continues to be a hot topic. Ángel Correa's goal in the final minutes of the game was a cold shower for the Basque fans , and now they have received another setback.

Last year, El Correo produced a report listing the grounds that had been fined the most, with San Mamés in second place . Only El Sadar, Osasuna's stadium, exceeded the 55,000 euros that Athletic Club had to pay in fines for insults. In fact, the Basque club received fines in eight of the thirteen home games last season.

Simeone and Spain were the objectives

In this case, Athletic Club is stumbling over the same stone again and is doing so by targeting already known targets. As our colleagues at El Correo have been able to find out, the latest complaint indicates that there were insults at three points during the match. All of them from "sectors 105 to 110 of the Lower North Stand - new Popular Animation Stand -".

The document specifies that in the 20th minute they chanted "Fucking Spain, fucking team", in the 64th, "Ole, ole, cuckold Simeone". Finally, around the 65th minute they chanted: "Let them go, tell them to go, once and for all".

Athletic tried to solve it

If last year they were second in the 'ranking of fines for insults in stadiums', this season it seems that San Mamés has decided not to lose the lead. At the time, againstGetafe and Valencia the same thing happened and they were sanctioned. Now, against Atlético de Madrid, history repeats itself and it would be the third consecutive one.

In February, the Biscayan club sent a letter to members in the Grada Popular and to those with the 'Gazte Abonoa' membership card. The former were warned that if they chanted offensive words they would be taken before the Disciplinary Committee, where they would be exposed to being banned for between 1-3 years or for life. The latter were threatened that "expulsion proceedings would be initiated."

It worked at the time, but we are seeing that it seems insufficient and drastic measures must be taken again. In fact, Jon Uriarte - president of Athletic - referred to the matter on Monday. After thanking Herri Harmaila for their work in promoting the event, he said that " there are things that we think need to be improved, and we are working together on this."
